Welcome to the Portal of the Language Programs!
We are the Training Authority (TA) for all language programs in the CAF. As such, we develop and maintain programs that are of the highest quality to meet the needs of the Defense mission. It includes the Qualification Standards (QS), the Training Plans (TP) and the entire curriculum for French and English languages and multiple foreign languages. We also enforce the standards on a national level for those programs.
The delivery of second language training is delegated to the elements (CA, RCAF, RCN) and to the Canadian Forces Language School (CFLS) who are responsible for managing the different language training centers across the country, under their respective commands. For information regarding local second language training opportunities, contact the Coordinators of Official Languages (COL) or visit your local language training centre on the closest base.

Training and evaluation of a foreign language ability is only available to CAF personnel identified by their CM to occupy a position or fill a role that requires a specific ability in a given foreign language. The CM will be the one coordinating necessary training and evaluation.

Personnel who wants to self-declare an ability in a foreign language must do so via their orderly room, for entry in Gardian.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) Second Language Evaluation (SLE) is the only SOL certification testing instrument currently accredited and used for CAF members. The criteria for testing eligibility for second language can be found in the DAOD 5039-8, Canadian Armed Forces Second Official Language Certification Testing.

To enable CAF members to fulfil their duties and progress, the Career Manager (CM), as described in DAOD 5039-7,has the responsibility to ensure members requiring language training are identified and made available to undergo second official language training.
The continuous courses are offered to all Regular Force personnel and the registration is managed solely by the CM as the posting authority. This type of course is most often administered as a one year posting using an Advance Training List (ATL) position. However, when an ATL position is not available or for other administrative or operational reasons, the CM can liaise with the home unit to discuss attendence of language training in a different capacity, using another training option.
Officers of the rank of Cdr/LCol or higher and CPO1/CWOs who are selected by the Second Language Training Succession Planning Committee (SLTSPC) are governed by a separate directive issued by Director of Senior Appointments (DSA).
Personnel of the Primary Reserve may be admitted on a case-by-case basis if they meet the conditions listed in DAOD 5039-7
Autonomous Language Learning in Interaction with Elements in Synergy (ALLIES) is a language learning application developed by the Canadian Defence Academy. It's available at all times on both the Internet and DND Intranet. Therefore, you can study when and where you wish.
